“Tasty Bread, a.k.a. Pinoy Tasty” and it’s Legacy

Sliced bread has long been a staple in the Philippines thanks to its convenience, versatility, and accessibility. The original “Tasty Bread” brand played a significant role in popularizing sliced bread in the country. Many other big brands, such as Sarimonde, Gardenia, and French Baker, adopted its success and called it “Pinoy Tasty.” Today, sliced bread can be found in virtually every Filipino household, making it an integral part of the country’s culinary landscape.

The use of sliced bread in our Crispy Tuna Bread Pie recipe is a nod to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Filipino home cooks. By replacing the traditional pastry crust with sliced bread, the formula becomes more accessible, budget-friendly, and easy to prepare. In addition, the mild flavor and soft texture of sliced bread make it a perfect base for the savory tuna and cheese filling, ensuring that every bite is delicious and satisfying.

  • 1/2 cup 35 g Cabbage (minced)

  • 1/4 cup 32 g Carrots (minced)

  • 1 medium 1 medium Red Onion (peeled and minced)

  • 2 cloves 2 cloves Garlic (peeled and minced)

  • 1/4 cup 59.5 g All-Purpose Cream

  • 1/2 cup 112 g Mayonnaise

  • Ground Black Pepper to Taste

  • Cheese (any kind that you like)

  • 2 2 Eggs

  • 1 cup 108 g Breadcrumbs

  • Cooking Oil

Directions

  • Prepare the tuna filling: In a large bowl, mix the drained canned tuna, minced cabbage, carrots, red onion, garlic, all-purpose cream, mayonnaise, and ground black pepper to taste. Set aside.
  • Prepare the bread: Trim the brown edges off the white bread slices, then flatten each slice with a rolling pin, the back of a spoon, or a glass.
  • Assemble the pies: Place a generous amount of the tuna filling on one side of each flattened bread slice, and add a slice or grated of your favorite cheese. Fold the bread in half, covering the filling, and press the edges together with a fork to seal.
  • Prepare for frying: In a shallow bowl, beat the two eggs. And in another bowl, pour the breadcrumbs. Dip each bread pie in the beaten egg, then coat it with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick.
  • Fry the pies: Heat the cooking oil over medium heat in a deep frying pan or skillet. Fry the pies in batches, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove any excess oil.
  • Serve and enjoy: Crispy Tuna Bread Pies are best enjoyed freshly cooked, as they lose their crunch over time. Serve them as appetizers or snacks with your favorite dipping sauce.
